We live in the era of the 80’s B action movie on steroids.

In the same way that I am tired of retirees in Florida selecting our President, I am tired of 14 year olds dictating which movies Hollywood churns out. This is why the opportunity for streaming is so great. Adult movies with complex characters and nuanced stories will actually make it to the eyeballs of their intended audiences. Honestly, how many explosions do we really need to see? The constant barrage of fire and brimstone has honestly lost its well... uh fire power. There isn’t enough space to get nostalgic and much better writers have already lamented.

Collectively as a society, we feel a little empty inside. On screen, we’ve seen enough destruction, dystopian futures, and saving of the world/universe. I want to see the lives of the people all of these superheroes are risking their lives for- The disenfranchised, the broken towns, the normal citizens who will fight with all of their might to be better. For a large part of our population these stories may hit too close to home which is why escapism exists. But as Escapism dominates the collective consciousness we risk losing touch with reality.

Should we ditch the superhero completely? No. Also, I’m aware that’s not possible. I do like them, I’m just worried about how pervasive they have become. In the real world, there is not a savior that will come down and save us. That duty is left to the normal working Joe’s of the world, our neighbors, fellow countrymen, immigrants- human beings! And unless we do better as a society by relearning how to empathize for one another, we may not actually be worth saving.
