Sports have infected our consciousness
Sports are everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, October is my favorite month of the year. The air becomes crisp but not yet cold. The colors change to a softer earth tone, a welcomed change from the brightness of summer. Ultimately, it comes down to sports. Baseball playoffs, college football rivalry weeks, no true frontrunner has yet emerged in the NFL and the NBA hasn’t started. That means there is a game that I may actually care about 7 days a week. That’s a lot of time to care about something that brings no monetary value back to the household. Sports don’t put food on the table and I don’t really learn anything from them, not about society, the world or myself. However, it’s the one ‘water cooler’ moment left in this click-bait, binge-watching society of ours. Sports have infected the consciousness and dominated conversations.
Analyzing game footage, technique and player personnel has become a thriving ancillary industry. No longer is it just sports writers, it is bloggers, analysts, former players, radio hosts, “personalities” all vying for attention with science-like information about the physical opportunities of grown-ups playing a game. If we spent as much time analyzing and dissecting science or politics in the way that we do with sports, we would have a much more educated population but we don’t because those two subjects don’t express our masculinity. Our dominance. Most importantly, our desire to be the best. Men seek glory and the gridiron, diamond and court are all we have left to attain it.
How hollow we have become. This is why men are inevitably going to fall behind, especially American men. We have lost the ability to have an intelligent, thought-provoking, objective conversation. Instead we have emotional tirades. Fits. Tantrums. Clarion calls. .
It is the proliferation of sports in the consciousness that will be America’s downfall from the inside out. Look at the fall of the Roman Empire. One of the main reasons was the ruling class’s (rich) dependence on lobotomizing the mob via entertainment. The more uncivilized the entertainment, the more destructive it was to their civilized society. Barbarians intellectually conquered the Romans long before 537AD when the Goths entered the city.
Bestiality and other lewd and sexually explicit acts were exhibited in the Coliseum arena to amuse the mob. Widespread gambling (Fantasy Sports) on the chariot races and gladiatorial combats (Football) along with massive consumption of alcohol (pretty self explanatory) ate through the moral foundations of their society.
As the top 1% continues to take over, beware of the weaponization of sports through the ideals of victory at all costs, glory, and regional identification, it has happened before.
