Jobs in the future will require men to be like women.
Men are on track to asshole their way out of a job but the honest fact is that women are flatly outworking them. In a world that requires a college degree for not just upward social mobility but to stay stagnant, men are falling behind. Culturally this isn’t surprising. We have been entitled to good paying jobs and fruitful labor since the industrial revolution, and now that the playing field is starting to level out, women are jumping at their opportunity while men are rotting away.
The jobs that will be coveted in the future and are currently one of the fastest growing are mostly service-based. This does not make for a bright future for men unless they change their tune. Healthcare is a hotbed issue but the job market thrived during the past recession. Healthcare and service-based industries require tenderness and care, not brute strength and power. Imagine a coal worker in a nurse uniform caring for your ailing mother. I’m not saying that it’s impossible nor is that meant to be a joke, it is simply the direction in which our economy is dictating us to go. The energy sector has long provided good-paying, labor-intensive jobs to non-college educated males willing to break their backs toward benefits and a livable salary but what happens to that part of the population when wind and solar take over? Let's just say I understand the fight against switching over due to jobs, but regardless, eventually we will have to make the choice, why not now? The quicker we adapt, the quicker the education system can adapt, the generational thinking will change and we can all move on to a healthier, more responsible economy.
Working class men fought back this past election. They don’t want to see their jobs replaced, which is understandable, but there used to be a time when jobs dictated migration not throwing tantrums. Mankind’s ability to adapt shot us to the top of the food chain, but it is a double-edged sword as we are so adaptable we can become content with any situation no matter how dire. So, if men want to fight, they need to re-direct their energy toward bettering themselves and investing in the future as opposed to keeping the status quo. “This is all I’ve ever known” or “I’m a third generation whatever” are sentiments that are unforgivable and unsympathetic. Change is inevitable, it's the only constant in this world- a teacher told me that... in 4th grade.
In order to survive this changing world and our changing economy, men will have to learn the traits that women are born with. It will take work, but most of importantly it will take a lack of pride and ego. Listen. Care. Nurture. And don’t be surprised to see a murse wearing a murse.
